Texas has 254 counties, but not all have their own jail, about 20 counties contract with others, creating a patchwork system with over 230 jail facilities statewide. This makes oversight inconsistent and accountability difficult, especially when it comes to the treatment of women and gender-expansive people.
Alongside improving conditions of confinement, we’re also demanding investment in non-carceral supports like housing, healthcare, and community-based crisis response.
