Lioness Justice Impacted Women's Alliance is proud to have contributed to the University of Texas Prison and Jail Innovation Lab's newly released report, The Nightmare of Sleep in Prison Report .
The report includes findings and recommendations that reflect concerns incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women have raised for years. Women in custody face unique challenges related to trauma, mental health, pregnancy, menopause, and safety, all of which can significantly impact sleep and overall wellbeing. The report recognizes the importance of community and a sense of safety in women's carceral living environments. Among its recommendations, the report urges correctional agencies to consider the distinct needs of women when developing housing and sleep policies.
For Lioness, this collaboration reflects the importance of including lived experience in research. It is a reminder that the people most affected by incarceration bring essential expertise to the development of solutions that promote dignity and wellbeing.
